Since 2011, Fukuyama Engineering & Construction Pte. Ltd had been a trusted partner to main contractors in Singapore’s tunnelling sector, complemented by its tech-enabled logistics arm, Fukuyama Logistics. Like many companies in the construction and logistics sectors, Fukuyama struggled to attract and retain talent, due to perceptions of tough working conditions, limited career progression and less competitive pay.

To bridge manpower gaps, Fukuyama tapped into Workforce Singapore’s (WSG) Mid-Career Pathways Programme (MCPP), bringing six mid-career individuals into its operations—three of whom were eventually converted to full-time employees. The programme served as a low-risk platform to assess long-term fit while mitigating the risk of early turnover. The structured framework of the MCPP also enabled Fukuyama to provide targeted on-the-job (OJT) training in areas such as infotech accounting, inventory management and workplace safety protocols.

Beyond manpower support, the MCPP helped cultivate a culture of mentorship and collaboration within the company. Existing employees had the opportunity to train and guide newcomers through OJT, promoting cross-generational learning and cohesion.

Crucially, the programme’s financial support helped offset initial onboarding costs. The grant eased this burden significantly, enabling the company to continue investing in training without stretching its resources.

According to Mr Desmond Toh, Director, the programme presented a practical solution to both workforce gaps and industry hiring challenges. He said, “The MCPP provided the structured support we needed to welcome mid-career individuals who brought with them fresh ideas and valuable skills. It not only helped fill critical manpower gaps but also strengthened our team through mentorship and collaboration.”
